Dynamic Measurement of Crude Oil and its Derivatives

The oil industry focuses on the exploration, production and commercialization of hydrocarbons and its derivatives. One key to the profitable exploitation of these resources is to measure, as accurately as possible, the quantities being transported and traded.

From the production fields to the final destinations worldwide, the dynamic measurement of oil and its by-products has an immediate impact upon negotiations between companies or nations. Not receiving the correct amount will generate claims, financial penalties and/or a loss of trust and reputation damage: the oil company suffers. On the other hand, delivering more than the amount requested will lead to lost revenue for the same organization.

This course equips you with the knowledge and skills to help minimize these risks and direct losses. By the end of the training you will be able to:

  • Establish criteria for the selection, operation and maintenance of dynamic measurement systems (e.g. the methodologies and tools for the Metrological Assurance of Custody Transfer of Oil and its Derivatives)
  • Recognize the benefits of implementing and maintaining a dynamic measurement system that is highly accurate
  • Determine the operation principles of the meters applied to operational control
  • Identify procedures for a proper control operation and custody transfer under recognized technical standards such as:

    • API MPMS (American Petroleum Institute Manual of Petroleum Measurement Standards)
    • ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
    • ASTM International (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials)
    • American Gas Association (AGA)
  • Evaluate current dynamic measurement systems, to identify areas of improvement and ensure compliance with current standards
  • Acquire the knowledge to implement audits and internal controls on the measurement system(s) to ensure continuous improvement

The course is ideal if you are responsible for measuring fluids in the hydrocarbon sector, for controlling losses and/or volumetric accounting, and for custody transfer and other activities relating to metrology systems.
